SAM is a jailbreak app for Cydia that allows you to unlock your iPhone so that you can activate and use a non-stock SIM card that is not supported by your existing carrier. SAM (Subscriber Artificial Module) can be easily installed and applied to any jailbroken iPhone that has Cydia installed. The developer of SAM, Sam Bingner (@sbingner), has made the process of installing SAM a lot easier with the latest version. This is good news for those who are new to unlocking. Previously you would have had to connect your iPhone to iTunes, and use the original SIM card and get a hold of country/carrier and SIM IDs to perform an unlock. With the latest version of SAM (version 0.1.16.-1), unlocking is now a streamlined process that involves just a few taps and a few minutes of your time.

The unlocking procedure using SAM currently works on most iPhones, including the iPhone 4S, which is great news. This means you can just take out your ATT sim card and use a T-Mobile SIM on your iPhone, for example. Unlocking an iPhone is great for those who want to use a different carrier than the one their iPhone is 'locked' into at the moment. Reasons for wanting to use a non-standard carrier vary from user to user, but it can be good for those traveling abroad, and also to use a non-standard phone and data plan on an iPhone which could help some people save money etc.

Micro-SIM: When the iPhone 4 debuted in 2010, it was the first smartphone from any company to use the micro-SIM format. The micro-SIM is substantially smaller than the original SIM. Nano-SIM: The nano-SIM debuted in the iPhone 5 in 2012. The nano-SIM is about 12% smaller than the micro-SIM.

  • A common way to make calls on an iPad is with Facetime but you can also use your iPhone's cell number or the Messages app. IPhone calls on iPad sync the two devices and rout calls through your iPhone even without an Apple ID. You can also use third-party apps like Skype or Talkatone with Google Voice.
  • To use a second SIM on your iPhone with the NeeCoo Magic Card, you need to first download MoreCard from the App Store for free. Tap Allow to let the app access your notifications, contacts.

: As reported by a few users already, Apple has 'patched' their activation servers so that the SAM unlock may not work for new users any longer. If you did have an activation ticket from before, you can still use SAM. We will keep you posted if new unlocking methods are uncovered.

Warning: A quick word of caution. Please proceed with unlocking at your own risk!

The following are the detailed steps on how to download and install SAM on a jailbroken iPhone.

  8. Choose SAM from the list then tap the Install button and tap the Confirm button
  9. After the install is complete tap the Reload SpringBoard button

  5. That's it! Your iPhone will now reboot and your iPhone will pick up the new SIM and your new carrier name will appear on the top left of the iPhone after a few seconds.

Troubleshooting SAM

Follow these steps if you get an error message in SAM. These steps basically involve deleting a few system files, which require the iFile app. Errors you may experience might read something like 'You must select the original carrier SIMID of your iPhone' etc.

  1. Install iFile from Cydia.
  2. Open iFile and go to /var/root/Library
  3. Tap Edit and choose the Lockdown folder.
  4. Tap the zip button which creates a backup for you, then delete the lockdown folder
  5. Again in iFile go to /User/Library/Preferences and find SAM and delete com.bingner.sam.plist
  6. Turn off your iPhone, and turn it back on
  7. Put your new SIM card into your iPhone.
  8. Now again open SAMPrefs and make sure Auto Detect is selected. This will guess the correct SIM ID from the Region code of the iPhone.
  9. Tap Utilities & Attempt Activation. This may take a few minutes, so be patient.
  10. Your iPhone will reSpring and your iPhone should recognize the new SIM
  11. You can verify that your new SIM is working by calling 611 from the Phone app. You should hear the automated message from your new carrier such as T-Mobile.

If you run into any issues or have other suggestions for using SAM please share your experiences below.

With Quick Start, you can set up a new iOS or iPadOS device quickly using information from your current device.* Then you can restore the rest of your data and content to your new device from your iCloud backup.

If you're setting up a new device using your current device—and your current device is using iOS 12.4 or later or iPadOS—Quick Start offers the option of using device-to-device migration. This allows you to transfer all your data wirelessly from your current device to your new one.

Quick Start occupies both devices, so make sure that you choose a time when you won't need to use your current device for several minutes.

How to use Quick Start

  1. Turn on your new device and place it near your current device. The Quick Start screen appears on your current device and offers the option of using your Apple ID to set up your new device. Make sure that it's the Apple ID that you want to use, then tap Continue. If you don't see the option to continue on your current device, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on.
  2. Wait for an animation to appear on your new device. Hold your current device over the new device, then center the animation in the viewfinder. Wait for a message that says Finish on New [Device]. If you can't use your current device's camera, tap Authenticate Manually, then follow the steps that appear.
  3. When asked, enter your current device's passcode on your new device.
  4. Follow the instructions to set up Face ID or Touch ID on your new device.
  5. When asked, enter your Apple ID password on your new device. If you have more than one device, you might also need to enter their passcodes.
  6. Your new device offers the choice of transferring data from one device to another device or restoring apps, data, and settings from your most recent iCloud backup. You can also tap Other Options to restore from a backup on your computer. After you select a backup, you can choose whether to transfer some settings related to location, privacy, Apple Pay, and Siri.
  7. If you have an Apple Watch and you're setting up a new iPhone, you'll also be asked if you'd like to transfer your Apple Watch data and settings.

Transfer data directly from one iPhone or iPad to another

If your current iPhone or iPad is using iOS 12.4 or later or iPadOS, you can use device-to-device migration to transfer data directly from your previous device to your new one. You can do this wirelessly, or by connecting the devices together with a cable.

To migrate your data wirelessly, keep your previous device near your new one throughout the process as you follow the steps below. Make sure to keep both devices connected to power.

How to use device-to-device migration

  1. Turn on your new device and place it near your current device that's using iOS 12.4 or later or iPadOS.
If you can't use your current camera, tap Authenticate Manually, then follow the steps that appear.
  3. When asked, enter your current passcode on your new device.
  4. Follow the instructions to set up Face ID or Touch ID on your new device.
  5. Tap Transfer from [Device] to begin transferring your data from your previous iPhone or iPad to your new device. If you're using the wired method, the transfer icon indicates that your devices are connected. You can also choose whether to transfer some settings, such as Apple Pay and Siri, from your previous device to your new iPhone or iPad.
  6. If you have an Apple Watch and you're setting up a new iPhone, you'll be asked if you'd like to transfer your Apple Watch data and settings.
  7. Keep your devices near each other and plugged in to power until the iPhone data migration process is complete. Transfer times can vary based on factors such as the connection type that you're using, network conditions, and the amount of data being transferred.

Migrate data from your iPhone using a wired connection

You might choose the wired method if the wireless network that you're using is slow or congested. To migrate data from one iPhone to another using a wired connection, get a Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter and a Lightning to USB Cable, then follow these steps:

  1. Connect the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter to power through its Lightning port. Make sure to use a 12W or higher power adapter.
  2. Connect the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter to your current iPhone.
  3. Plug the Lightning to USB Cable into your new iPhone, then connect the other end to the adapter.
  4. Continue by following the steps above.

Finish up

After you transfer to your new iOS or iPadOS device, you might need to complete a few more steps to finish the process. Make sure that you set up and transfer your content to your new device before you sell or give away your previous iOS or iPadOS device.
